Safety Culture Starts With You, Yes You!

When we talk about safety culture, people often imagine large corporate programs, posters on the wall, or new procedures being introduced. In reality, safety culture starts much closer to the ground.
It starts with you.
And by “you”, we mean anyone in the organisation. Whether you are a CEO, a supervisor, a technician, a contractor or a new employee. Everyone interacts with risk in their daily work, and everyone influences how safety is perceived and handled around them.
Of course, the higher you are in the organisation, the greater your influence. Leadership roles come with a disproportionate impact on safety culture. But influence exists at every level.
A technician flagging a safety concern.
A supervisor listening to ideas raised by the team.
A planner considering safety from the design stage.
A manager taking difficult decisions to prioritise safety.
All these behaviours — often small, everyday ones — shape the culture around safety.
At its core, safety culture is simply the way people deal with risk in everyday work.
Over time, this way of dealing with risk spreads. It contaminates beyond the individual task, beyond safety itself, and often becomes part of a broader culture of operational excellence.
