Leadership by Example

Leadership in safety culture is not about slogans or authority. It starts with very basic behaviours. Following the rules yourself. Wearing PPE. Respecting procedures. But it goes much further than that.

Constructive leadership also requires soft skills: active listening, asking questions, being accessible to the team, and sometimes admitting you were wrong. These behaviours build trust.

The opposite behaviours destroy safety culture very quickly.

Blaming others. Distancing yourself from the team. Avoiding responsibility when problems occur. Being absent from operations. Or showing a fake attitude where safety is only mentioned when convenient.

Safety culture takes time to build. It is made of hundreds of small steps and everyday interactions. Yet it can be damaged very quickly. When people see a leader breaking the rules, even slightly, a breach appears. People begin to question the shared values.

“Why should I follow this rule if my manager doesn’t?”

That is why exemplarity matters so much.

Interestingly, mistakes by management can also become opportunities to strengthen safety culture. When a leader recognises a mistake, values the person who raised the issue, and handles it openly and constructively, it reinforces trust rather than weakening it.

Mistakes are human. The way we react to them defines the culture.
